“Out of clutter, find simplicity.”
― Albert Einstein

Truncated weekend due to a day in the office so here are your links for the weekend, quick and dirty! I’m off to wring the last dregs of delight out of Sunday evening.

I’m a fan of Everlane so this is interesting news.

Fantastic interview at The Lifestyle Edit with a go getting girl!

It’s been a long week. Let’s enjoy some baby elephants who think they are puppies.

That bad of a week, you say? Here, have another cute animal story!

Right up our collective alley, kittens.

House of Cards is back, let’s discuss the footwear of Claire Underwood and its significance.

It was International Women’s Day this week, here’s some photo inspiration and a bonus piece in Esquire by the uniformly fabulous and funny Caitlin Moran. Language and content warning, obviously. It’s Caitlin.

Now that the final episodes of Downton Abbey have aired stateside (gorgeous soap opera…failed utterly to live up to its potential…), have a read about the origins of the “tragic gay suicide” trope and why it’s important to show real diversity of real stories. Because it in turns shows real diversity of outcomes to lives lived.

ROAD TRIP!

With my 30th birthday approaching (fingers crossed we can make a trip to New York work to celebrate!), I really loved this article from The Muse about things you don’t have to have figured out by that date. Wonderfully refreshing and actually useful.

Podcasting and Youtubing are two mediums that I love, admire, and wish I had some more practical knowledge about. I’d love to try creating content in either for many reasons, not least of which is that both are platforms full of a lot of generous creators who share a ton of knowledge about their respective crafts (videography, editing, writing, collaboration, etc.) for free. There are also a lot of examples of creative generosity, one of which happened this week in which a vlogger posted a vid about a project he had been working on the subject of which was unintentionally scooped by CPG Grey, and wondering whether or not it was worth releasing his own work now that someone else had tackled the topic. To which CPG Grey released an open letter vid encouraging him to do so, bolstered by a heartening wave of supportive commentators, and talking honestly about the desire to create, the need to be unique, and the perils of a world where it’s next to impossible to have an original thought to talk about.

I own about half a dozen. Seriously.

Have a read and take a scroll through.

This short video about the world’s oldest family business is surprising, beautiful to watch, and just a little bit heartbreaking.

The hints of Spring continue to tantalize! I woke up this morning to bright sunshine and blue skies, and daylight savings doesn’t even start until next week. I might be the furthest thing from a sun bunny but heaven knows I welcome the return of the ability to get some Vitamin D that is not in capsule form.

This weekend we’re hitting up an exhibit on the Museum of London on the history of tattoos, we’ve done brunch at a favorite joint, and are generally being virtuous with working out and food shopping. I’ve also spent some time giving the site a facelift (lend me your thoughts! I’ve got a few tweaks to make but am generally happy with the upgrades) and catching up on reading. All in all, we’re going to call the weekend a win. Here are your links and tell me what you’ve been up to lately!

John Oliver talks Donald Trump, and the internet explodes in response.

More scientifically, FiveThirtyEight and Nate Silver weigh in on the hows and whys of Trump’s (relative, it turns out) popularity and how he stacks up not just against his Republican rivals, but how the R and D fields stack up compared to one another. Good reporting and numbers driven data don’t solve the problem of election for the highest office in the land (literally) turning into a dick measuring contest this week, if you’ll pardon the vulgarity…but they help distract me from that embarrassing and deeply depressing fact.

And now, a palate cleanser! I want to find this fox…and steal it. The cuteness slays.

A profile on the fabulous and adaptable Eva Chen and the rise of Instagram.

I’ve been eyeing a number of vintage “souvenir jackets” from the Pacific rim for months now (when I find a good enough design at a decent price, I’ll probably bite), but I loved this short look at how bomber jackets have evolved from military necessity to fashion statement.

Simple but inspiring image.

The College Prepster has some good blogging tips for anyone interested in getting started in the medium. Smart girl, lots of success, read up!

Madewell now ships to the UK and I have to sit on my hands not to take advantage of the fact. On a related note, I just managed to put holes in my house cardigan, and want to replace it with this beauty.

We’re one step closer to Jurassic Park now. Humanity, make smart choices!

And finally, a beautiful photo project spanning the gamut of the Black American experience.

Happy Valentines Day, lovers!

Another hectic but good week. Jeff, bless him, is working really demanding hours and while not as bad, I’m not far behind him! The good news is that in spite of some coworkers dealing with a minor outbreak of plague and some last minute priority assignments, I was able to work on some really fun projects as well (filming was involved, as you may have glimpsed). It’s amazing how even one fun project can really flavor a lot of more administrative ones more positively, there’s a life lesson in that somewhere I’m sure.

In other self-care and restorative news, Jeff and I are making good on travel goals already with a trip to Belgium booked next month and a holiday in Spain with our friends Kelsey and Cody (who you may remember from Ireland) is planned for November. In between now and then we’re looking at all kinds of breaks both long and short which will be good for the soul. I’ve also scored some tickets to an exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery celebrating a century of British Vogue, so good posts are on the horizon as promised. Here are you links, kittens, and tell me how your week went!

I don’t love or agree with everything the Green brothers have ever talked about on their incredibly prolific channel vlogbrothers, but this short piece on Millennials was interesting to me as a lot of the problems (admittedly largely “first world” in the extreme) he mentioned are topics that have been on my mind recently.

Economics, kids.

I have one, and most women I know do too.

Road trip?

This whole thing is downright Shakespearean.

Giving voice to the voiceless.

Note to self, sit up straight.

I’m on restricted clothes buying for the foreseeable future (due to prioritizing of investment purchases, of which I am still ridiculously proud), so someone else needs to snap up a pair of these.

In new always relevant to the minion coterie: Beyonce. Specifically her fantastic new video drop and some of the great pop culture writing that has sprung from it. More here. And yet more here. And yet more here!

For you marketers out there, this is a handy bit of info!

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

How to get that perfect 1920 bod.

Last Days in London.

This cartoonist’s project has been making the rounds, and it’s damn charming.

Surprising precisely no one, these shots of Misty Copeland are amazing.

Let’s read about a jewelry feud! Which of course is more complicated than than it sounds.

Also relevant to our interests, this blog.

A tiny bit of humor to round out the week (because it was a bit ridiculous how funny I found this video). Do. Not. Mess.

And in bad V-day news

“A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.”
― Francis Bacon

Another massive week at work, a bunch of freelance pitches sent off, another couple of potential media opportunities on the horizon I want to explore…capped off with a somewhat lazy weekend. Jeff is getting over a bad cold he’s been dealing with for two weeks and I’m battling not to catch it from him. Consequently, not nearly enough housework gets done.

In the meantime, more SDS writing is heading your way soon, just working out some new editorial calendars and topics, aren’t you lucky! Here are your links, tell me what you got up to this week.

Slay, queen.

Almost too darn pretty to be real.

Who really drives the luxury market?

Thoughts on the future of Twitter.

Wow…oops?

Take that, stereotypes. I do morbidly like the idea, though, that more wars may have been fought because non-reigning royal spouses needed something to do, bless them.

I have learned this week that there is an entire subsection of architecture built around rage and revenge. How on earth did I not know this?! This is, if you’ll forgive the pun, right up my alley!

You know what they say about big hair

As an owner of a RBF, this appealed.

I’m getting old, kittens, I have now taken a day-time nap two weekends in a row. This is unprecedented as I historically have been unable to sleep at all during the day unless pretty badly ill indeed. I’ve also found a silver hair so my goal of achieving Cruella de Vil like locks may yet become reality.

The weekend is just winding down here at Small Dog headquarters, so I’m off to bed with a pile of library books while Jeff unwinds with basketball. We spent the last two days taking in markets and Christmas decorations but alas, Monday and responsibility beckons. Here are some links to help postpone it just a little while longer…

CGP Grey has a new vid on the inequitable bio-hazard swap of the Columbian Exchange. Let’s hear it for the “soap and soup” phase of history.

Belgium, I love and miss you, you brave and wacky bastard. As long as Belgium stays defiant and weird, guys, I genuinely believe hatred and terrorism are doomed.

Thoughts on managers and the perfect opportunity to share stories about good and bad bosses. To the comments!

Another YouTube link, this time from the Royal Ballet on the history of pointe work.

Dance, jump on it

Cheese laws.

Thoughts on tiny houses, living with less, and appropriation.

Why is American dress so casual, and is it a bad thing?

This sent me on a delightful half hour of Etsy searching.

Gotta say, there’s still plenty of park canoodling these day.

“October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy drafts that bit at exposed hands and faces.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

It’s the first of November, everyone’s a bit confused as to where the year has gone, and we’ve turned on the heating for the first time. We are once again in that magical time of year where you can use your pipes to dry your laundry. Urban living, kittens!

In related news I finally replaced my winter coat (several years old) with a sleeker model, bought some ridiculously luxe smelling and seasonally appropriate candles, and picked up some slippers. I think cool weather has arrived. Even though the British weather is being, well, British and we’re having an odd, alternatively warm and cold weekend. I’m convinced the Brits talk about the weather so much because it makes no sense and all and sundry are constantly baffled by it.

Anyway, here are your links and let me know what your getting up to this week!

Garance Doré on French style.

Speaking of fashion, there has been a number of major shakeups in the industry lately. WWD has a good piece on the topic, burnout, and whether or not we have reached peak “fashion.”

Thoughts on working from a reformed overworker.

Big fan of this idea!

Number five, all the way.

Hm. Perhaps if Jeff continues to veto my desire for a partially shaved head a la Natalie Dormer, this will be deemed acceptable?

Well, let’s face it, this is a holiday necessity!

NaNoWriMo returns! Know anyone who’s doing it?

Saying no. Brilliantly.

“I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”
― Henry David Thoreau

Bit of an odd week with a loss in the family, the return of chronic sleeplessness, and battling the office cold. By Friday afternoon I felt I wasn’t even able to string sentences together coherently and (taking the advice of a co-worker) got permission to leave work a bit early and go home and to bed. Since my stress is usually proportional to how ordered my life is, I took the weekend to clean the house, do almost all our laundry, switch out my summer clothes for my cold weather ones, and do some proper food shopping and prep–all interspersed with copious amounts of internet-based time wasting and some just plain rest. The big news is that I finally managed to read the September issues of my magazines…which I hadn’t been able to touch until now.

Two days later I’m feeling recharged, just in time for Monday to hit. Luckily work is getting more balanced with the help of a lovely assistant I hired two weeks ago, and an interim sales manager who has seized the reins of her department with well-manicured and fabulously capable hands.

Here are your links, and tell me what’s happening in your worlds, kittens.

“This is my doctrine: Give every other human being every right you claim for yourself.”
― Robert G. Ingersoll, The Liberty of Man, Woman and Child

Long week, major milestones hit on all my projects, good friends in town from abroad, good news. Happy Friday!

Drafting this up as I read and watch the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling that marriage is marriage, whichever the partners. The last paragraph of the ruling in particular is making the rounds with good reason. As has been quoted, the arc of the moral universe bends towards justice.

Beautiful images of a horrific practice.

The email gods have heard us.

Into the Gloss’ “Top Shelfie” posts are always great but this one is almost painfully fabulous.

In other beauty news, the tyranny of disaster films must end.

Might need this.

Well…drat

Pitcairn has a fascinating (and troubled) history. It has now passed a law (which I’m in favor of, by the way) for its 48 residents that applies to none of them.

In case you were wondering.

To the library!

I have demanded this before, and I demand it again: how do people misplace this stuff?!

I’m currently neck deep in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, so this is also highly relevant to my interests. What’s that? You aren’t watching it? GET EDUCATED.

We’ve hit some major milestones with student debt recently, but I still found this impactful.

Let’s call it what it is: terrorism.

Oh hi, kittens. Where have I been, you ask? Well, first Dublin, then turning 29, then working on a project I can’t talk about, and then working 14+ hour days this week on another project I can’t even talk about. You see my difficulty in communications, yes?

No? I am in disgrace? Very well, I shall try to begin making it up to you immediately. My first offering is an extra long Friday Links post for your delectation. Tell me what you’re getting up to this weekend, or offer your harshest abuse at my neglect, in the comments!

Since I occasionally dabble in Mormon news, this story caught my attention.

I have so many thoughts about this story, it may have to form its own blog post, but I’m curious as to how US-based minions are thinking about it. Weigh in in the comments for me, please.

Moral of the story: “Wear comfortable shoes, square your shoulders, and walk like you’ve been sent to murder Captain America.”

And speaking of Avengers, Mark Ruffalo takes on the “I’m not a feminist” crowd, with some help from Libby Ann Bruce. One of my particular pet peeves is any phrase that begins, “I’m not a feminist, but…” and then goes on to make some point about parity of opportunity, education, and rights. Hate to break it to you…
