“I am somewhat exhausted; I wonder how a battery feels when it pours electricity into a non-conductor?”
― Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventure Of The Dying Detective

Any week includes the following in a conversation with your best friend, “Wait, you’re having a torrid, clandestine co-worker affair with a nice Jewish boy?” must have been a good one.  And it has been, busy but good.  This is the same friend who once had a man ask her to be his mistress, for the record.  Apart from being an extraordinary friend and wonderful all around person, she is an excellent dinner guest – her stories are amazing.  Anyway, I’m fiercely glad it’s a long weekend, because good as it’s been, I’m ready for a break.  What are you doing next Monday?  Sound off in the comments.

Check this out, and then respond with your best skewers!  I expect some great zingers in the comments, minions.

What’s that, she-minions?  You’re having a bit of a blah day, and you need something scrumptious to look at.  We live to serve: behold!

Of course.

We had the musical Camelot on VHS when I was a kid (remember VHS?  Did I just out my age?), and though I recall being extremely irritated with several of the characters for their life choices, I loved the look of Vanessa Redgrave’s Guinevere.  I remember being extremely taken by her first knuckle ring and thinking how unusual and elegant I found it.  Alas that my fingers never grew into long aristocratic tapers, so I could never pull them off, but more lengthy she-minions are encouraged to try.

This mouthwatering recipe is brought to you courtesy of the ever lovely Janssen.

New TV seasons are starting up soon and frankly I could leave most of them.  But my guilty pleasure of Downton Abbey will be back before we know it.  Here’s a cheeky cheat sheet just in case you’ve gotten confused as to what’s going on.

Message in a bottle! (Sung to the tune of the Sting and the Police song of the same name)

Impossibly pretty people with impossible access to impossibly high end products lead us lesser life forms in search for the perfect red lipstick.  I only post this because I love red lipstick.  What?  It’s my blog, I’ll link what I want!

This is a horrible product  that would give me heart attacks galore.

The President responds to Clint Eastwood’s (bizarre, odd, discordant, rambling…) bit with the chair at the Republican National Convention.   Politics aside, Twitter burn!

Transporting livestock – get creative.

And speaking of, the weekly sheep.  You know, just being adorable.

Friday Links XXX (Nearly There…)

“If you must have motivation, think of your paycheck on Friday.”
– Noel Coward

Let’s not even talk about how my house is a disaster zone either, there’s only a small chance that I’ll get around to it this weekend.

I’m so close to dead, kittens, it’s not even funny.  The week before the new term starts is always dreadful, and this year has been no different.

Here’s your links.  We’ll talk later.

Tumblr of the week.

Confession, I have a seldom indulged love of rosewater.  I had a sweet milk drink at an Indian restaurant that had rosewater as a main ingredient the other day, and it was odd by delicious.  My favorite quirky perfume is Tokyo Milk’s Gin and Rosewater.  I used to have a rosewater face tonic that did magical things to complexion but was far too expensive to keep up.  I’m not nearly crafty enough to try this, but minions who are should report back after making this.

The only thing worse than badly intentioned clever people are well intentioned idiots.  See politics.  And also this dear little old lady

I’ve been on a stationary kick lately, something about them seems unbelievably adult and finished.  A couple of friends of mine have personalized stationary and whenever I receive anything from them in the mail I’m impressed.  There is a look that comes with well chosen stationary that proclaims to the world, “Here is a person who has his/her act together.  Do not mess.”  Here are a few of the paper goods that have recently caught my eye.

I want this cat, purely for decorative purposes.

Trends might no longer be as all important as they once were in fashion.  Which is good news for me, because as much as I enjoy fashion, I’ve accepted that I will never wear a peplum, and the dark 90’s style lip is great but not for me, but I do love the equestrian style that’s cropping up.  Oh, but I’m poor.  Classics it is!

Sheep of the week.

Friday Links XXVIII

“I think we should change the amount of time in each day. Sunday thru Friday should be reduced from 24 hours down to ten minutes, and Saturday would become a 167-hour day. That way, when people ask me what I did all week I could truthfully respond, “I slept all week. But I got a hell of a lot done on Saturday.”
― Jarod Kintz, The Days of Yay are Here! Wake Me Up When They’re Over

Anticlimactic as it turned out.

Apart from Monday when a shrieking, disturbed man was running straight at me and I had a (surprisingly matter-of-fact), “Great, this is how I die,” moment, this week hasn’t been terribly exciting but for one fact: my family is in town!  I haven’t seen them since Christmas of last year so it’s quite a treat.  Last night J. and I took them to our favorite barbeque joint and then hung out at our place for a couple of hours.  Today they’re going for a hike in the mountains (while I bring home bacon, or whatever) and we’re going to a show this evening.  Tomorrow we’ve got a picnic and dinner at my godparents house.  Needless to say, I’m anxious for the work week to be over.  Here are your links, well beloved minions.  What will you darlings be up to this weekend?

Text speak: not as new as you’d think.

Homeless and abused to artist.  I’m not talking about a person.

The illusion is shattered.

So is a treasured part of my childhood.

Minions!  You are all required to make yourself a signature polish at once!

A six year old who knows her Greek mythology and takes stabs at the plots of great novels based on covers?  Clearly she and Stormaggedon are going to be friends.

Olympics, still happening.  Here’s a great moment from its history.

I am not a girl who squeals at spiders, I am a girl who rolls her eyes at her shrieking roommates, catches spiders, and releases them outside.  I caught snakes in the backyard and out at my family’s land routinely.  I loathe cockroaches but they do not produce fear in me so much as… murderous psychopathy.  But I don’t think I could eat this without at least a few moments hesitation.

No fear of heights either but more than a couple of these would make me dizzy.

Can I just say it?  Ryan Lochte does nothing for me.  Apparently he’s the second coming of Adonis to some, but I don’t get it.  Not least because whenever he opens his mouth (or his Twitter account) he seems less and less…shall we say, articulate?

As our summer blockbusters wind down and the Very Serious Films that could contend for Oscars begin to show up on the radar, here’s Vulture’s list of the 100 Most Valuable Stars, just in case you were wondering.

Take that, poachers!

Honestly, doesn’t that thing go in a safe deposit box or something?  How do you misplace one!

Friday Links XXVII

“Friday: The day after Thursday and before Saturday according to Rebecca Black. Also the most annoying day of the week now.”
― Aaron Peckham, Urban Dictionary: Fularious Street Slang Defined

Our Summer of London is drawing to a close, kittens.  “Why, C.,” I hear you exclaim, “’tis but the the first days of August!  Surely summer is not over yet, why would you say so?”  Because stores around here are putting up Halloween decor, that’s bloody why.  If I see anything for Christmas up before Labor Day, I solemnly vow to give the shop owner thereof a sharp reprimand.

Me, come Sunday evening.

Anyway, it’s been another slowish week but here are your links, only a few today.  Our weekend will be spent feverishly cleaning as my parents and two siblings are coming into town soon and all attempts at grown up-ery must be made.  No one’s fooled, but at least the kitchen counters will be gleaming.  Pity J., minions, a world of stressed out crazy is about to be unleashed on him.

To all expectant mothers ready to pop, or women who have yet to spawn (to various friends and relations’ annoyance), I give you this glorious site.  Mind the URL.

Could you go years without buying anything new?

Such an interesting project!  Hat tip to Lauren from Little Farmhouse in the Big City.

Perspective.  An uncomfortable one.

A desperate need of perspective.

What Should We Call Me goes to France, darlings, et j’adore!

The Olympics continue, spoilers notwithstanding.  Given your height/weight, what event would you most likely compete in, compared to other athletes?  Apparently, I’m a weightlifter (5’1”, 120 lbs, who knew?).

My godmother tells a story that always convulses me.  Driving around the city one day with one of her children when they were young, the youngster pointed out of the window and declared, “Look, mommy, a princess!”  Fairy looked an beheld not a Disney impersonator but a man in full drag.  “That’s not a princess, honey, that’s a queen,” she answered.  I’ve only had one friend who participated in drag, but I still think it’s interesting how wigs, makeup, and constricting garments can turn turn someone into another persona entirely.  To that end, here are some intriguing portraits.

Friday Links XXVI: Olympics Editions (sort of)

“Go where we may, rest where we will,
Eternal London haunts us still.”
― Thomas Moore

I never got around to telling you about our last two days in London, kittens, partly because one of those days was spent cleaning the house J. lived in and the other (which was a fantastic morning at the Portobello Road Market) I failed utterly to take pictures of.  Between the vintage shops, the paper goods, and the ancient Roman and Egyptian antiquities, I did a lot of fantasy shopping in my head.  J. indulged me with a swing by a favorite bookshop, before we hopped on some buses (certain tube stations being closed for maintenance) and rode around the city for a while.  We had one last swing through Covent Garden to check out the markets and street performers, indulge in J. in a pair of Paul Smith shoes to replace two pairs that took a beating this winter, and grab me a truly fantastic blazer from Zara (I love sale season in Europe!).

The Olympics kick off officially today, so I can at least catch a few glimpses of London skyline here and there on the telly.  In the meantime, here are your links, minions and let me know what fun things you’re doing for the weekend.

Tumblr find of the week: remember those “choose your own adventure” novels?  Well, it wasn’t inevitable that you’d always make wise decisions.

Made any mistakes lately?  I have.  Nothing major, but I tend to beat myself up over them just the same – but it could always be worse.

Oh good grief.  Can’t we all just agree you’ve gone mainstream and violated your own ideals already?

What?  You’re in the Louvre too?!

The real Olympics are kicking off today and I’m missing London so here’s a bit of Brit love for your home.  A phone, a mat, something a bit more personal.

Also, the real Olympics aren’t always glamorous.

And as for Brit labels, we’ve been dropping some serious coin on J. these days, getting his work wardrobe finished up and making sure he’s ready to look the part of a City man.  So, it’s absolutely my turn, right, minions?

Creepy, Victorians.  Just creepy.

It really does take a village.  It shocks me how quickly people forget (or fail to actually learn) that they are usually the product of a lot of other people’s goodwill, success, or work.

Clean energy technology development: pretty nifty!

The weekly sheep returns in smug, cute glory.

Friday Links XXV: Return of the Links

“Fridays are absolutely without a doubt the best day of the week, five grueling days of the same routine seem to melt at three o’clock on Friday afternoon. There’s a sense of magic there, everything smells better, tastes better, and the colors are brighter. As opposed to Sunday evenings when everything begins to get dim all over again.”
― Stefanie Ellis, Ashes

True, but still not a ton of fun.

This week has been rough, ducklings.  I got off the plane at 10am Monday morning and was at work by 1pm.  I’ve got the obligatory air travel induced cold and sore throat, and I’d much rather be in London.  Who wouldn’t?  Luckily it’s Friday and we’re back to our regularly scheduled blogging routine.  I’ve got plenty more London posts for you, but we must, by all means, observe tradition!

We saw dogs everywhere in London and our puppy lust is raging strong.  When we finally get one, I’m totally going to slap one of these on it’s collar.

There’s something about public transportation that makes people read, here’s a blog dedicated to it.  Everyone on the London tube was reading – yes there were iPhones and iPods aplenty, but honestly I saw far more books than electronics.  Traditional publishing lives!

The oddest thing about fashion is how far in advance it plans.  Here we are in the blazing heat of July and the major houses recently trotted out their wares for the Autumn/Winter lines.  I stocked up on my well-beloved British mags and they are stuffed to the gills with gorgeous stuff for cold weather to set my cravings alight.  Here’s the ever fabulous Tom and Lorenzo‘s post on one of my personal favorite haute couture designers, Elie Saab.

Wow.

I have a feeling that the gentleman called the young lady, “Shorty,” immediately prior to this now gif-ed clip.

Which came first, the cat video or the egg?  Apparently, this.

This…was a thing?  Seriously?

I saw a girl whip one of these out on the tube and couldn’t rest until I knew where she got it.

Fascinating article from the NYT to make your wheels turn a bit.  I realized a while back that I haven’t made any new friends in a long time.  Growing up moving every few years I got to be pretty good at it, but I found that it was impossible/unnecessary to keep up with all of them.  The true soulmates of friends are rare, but neither time nor distance weakens the bond, and the ones who are more transient pass out of your life easily.  I’m always open to meeting new people, but honestly if all I had for the rest of my life was my four best friends, I think I’d be happy.  Friendship, kittens: a strange animal.

Well, at least MTV isn’t hiding it anymore.

Friday Links XXIV

“So what are you doing next Friday night?”
“What have you got in mind?”
“We could try hitting each other with cars,” she suggested cheerfully.
– Josephine Angelini, Starcrossed

Just making it through the end of the week, minions, and then it’s off to London next Monday to get J. wrapped up in robes and officially done with grad school!  We’ll try to keep up with updates and pictures, but frankly you know how good the Small Dog clan is at that.  I can’t wait to be back in the city!

It makes me this happy!

In the meantime, well-beloved kittens, here are some links.  Let me know what you’ve been up to this summer!  Has it been crazy like ours, or something more mellow and serene, sitting on porches and drinking iced tea?

Huh.  I snack in my free time, but you know.  Whatever.  Show off.

Go ahead and try to be in a bad mood.  I double dog dare you.

Joanna Goddard, the fabulous blogger over at A Cup of Jo, and a former writer for Glamour magazine (among other publications) has done another work/life balance series about modern working women and motherhood.  There’s some good perspectives there, go check it out.

Dog houses fit for canine royalty.

You may have heard a bit about that  damned elusive (Pimpernel!) Higgs Boson/God Particle this week, here’s a short documentary about the search for it.

I like to think I’d last a couple days, but deep in my heart, I know that dropped into the desert I’m a goner.  Unlike this gentleman.

Here is a fabulous podcast that traces a creative lineage from Dickens to Geico.  Don’t believe me?  Check it out.

Alright, can we all just agree that these are great?

I am a good bad influence friend, ducklings, and I found you another place to spend money.  Lots of things are cute in this shop but I particularly love the Alice in Wonderland themed racks and hanger-hooks and currently covet them exceedingly.  And I’d be lying if the Napoleon key rack didn’t call to something deep and primal in my soul.

On the momentous day of July 4th, 1776 George Washington did what?

The weekly sheep.  I’m fairly positive your brain just shorted out with cuteness.

Friday Links XXII (On The Road Again)

“Love one another and you will be happy.  It’s as simple and as difficult as that.”
~ Michael Leunig

We’re still roadtripping and doing wedding stuff.  We’re busy running ragged and partying, alternatively, so here are your links:

The DJ by the end of the night. Potentially.

Whatever political persuasion, this is an interesting story on changing a political message and a clever campaign to get people’s attention for a cause.  Mind you watch the whole thing.

“It belongs in a museum!”

This is either incredible skill or way too much free time.  Possibly both.

Oh Ascot, how do I love thee?  Let me count the hats…the cracktastic, crazy, ludicrous hats.  Occasionally there are toppers of lovely and understated good taste, but who cares about those?

The writing nooks of great authors.

You might not believe it (given my confession on Monday), but I don’t like the cheapness of fashion.  I can have a good time in H&M, but I don’t mistake anything there for long term investment pieces (much less pieces that will last more than a season’s hard wearing).  One of my personal projects has been streamlining my wardrobe into something multipurpose, practical, and pretty… and much smaller and better made.  Hence my interest in this new book.  Anyone read it yet?

Enjoy numbers one through twenty-four, and number twenty-five’s the weekly sheep.  Hat tip to Savvy for finding it.

Monday, Ho!

“Ahh, what a day! Up at 6:00, a 10-mile run in the sleet, and NOW a big bowl of plain oatmeal! How I love the crazy hedonism of weekends!”
– Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes

I indulged this past weekend, minions.  I may have overindulged, in fact!

Let’s burn plastic  and worry about doing penance on Monday.

I’ve had a self-imposed shopping ban in place for months now, saving up for a major shopping trip, and I finally took it.  Woof.  There was carnage, kittens.  And then I went to a movie and dinner with my godfamily to round off my weekend of hedonism, because between weddings and assorted craziness we haven’t been able to play as much lately and that needed to be rectified.

Now the Small Dog clan is going on austerity measures until the holidays – Germany would adore us.

J.’s back in town tonight, permanently, no more cross continental marriage!  And immediately I drag him to an out of state wedding this weekend, we have another godfamily dinner at the start of next week, I head out to the Flyboy’s Wedding Part Deux in Louisiana the Saturday after, and the next day is our three year anniversary.  Life events are like buses, none come for huge stretches and then they all come all at once!

Friday Links XXI

“There is no such cozy combination as man and wife.”
~ Menander

A bit tardy minions, but you’ll forgive me as it was for a good cause.  I had our annual secretaries retreat today and then had to hightail it to Margot’s wedding.  The girl gone and done it – she’s hitched!  It’s been a lovely but long day, so here are your links and let Aunty C.  just take a quick nap, k?

Shake hands and make up, war can only last so long (I’m looking at you, Rome).

Speaking of wars, here’s a professor explaining how he lectures on the Trojan War – watch the whole thing if you want.  I myself could barely make it past the first couple of minutes wherein he declares that every year fewer and fewer students even know what the Trojan War is.  I’m wringing my hands, and Mum is probably gnashing her teeth in frustration!

The end point of the Big Bang has an equally negative sounding name and some unpleasant effects.  Luckily we’re a few billion years out from it.

The fun history of photoshop.  Some people in the 19th century were pretty darn good at it.

A great article (written by a friend!) about herself, Mitt Romney, the Mormon Moment, and how they intersect in personal and unexpected ways.  It’s a fantastic piece, and not just because I adore this woman.  Check it out.

Here’s yet another place I’ve found for you to spend your money, I’m having a kitsch craving moment with these, and even the more toned down versions are pretty cute.

This story is amazing.  A (sort of) God’s creation doesn’t quite act the way he intended.  There may be a philosophical lesson here, but even if not, have a listen.

This blog‘s been making the rounds, but still quite fun.  A British school girl documents her lunches every day, and the phenomenon has spread so people can send in snap shots of their lunches from all over the world.

A while back I went through and weeded everyone from my social networks that I didn’t actually know personally and hadn’t spoken with in the past six months, but I never really thought of the role that exclusivity plays in social networking.

Grocery shopping habits across the decades, and the role of food industries.

If I could do one thing for incoming freshman to our humble university, it would be to sit them down and make them watch this.  Freshman, and most seniors to be honest, you haven’t earned the right to be treated specially yet.  You’ve got a long road ahead, get to work.

The weekly sheep, just try to be in a bad mood now!
