See, the American right needs its viewers and product consumers absolutely livid with rage and grievance…but not enough to actual riot over it. That’s a tricky balance, and I’m not surprised they lost control over it. That’s always the end result of rabble-rousing. I wrote about this back in 2016 and the last four years have only reinforced my thinking on the matter.
Hells yeah, and I’m one of ’em. Shout out to my doctor who explicitly said she didn’t want to take me off my meds in winter in a normal year and she definitely wasn’t going to do it in 2020. Bless her.

But I feel obliged to repeat, this is also bang on target for fascist movements which will stay enraged and look to the next guy to lead them to victory. Apart from his personal failings, which are legion, the long term risk of Trump was that he would pave the way for someone much better at the authoritarian dictator gig than he was.

Read your election post… Hindsight! Amazing isn’t it to look back at the shock and concern we exhibited four years ago only to find that we didn’t worry anywhere near enough. I constantly think back to something a friend wrote on facebook as she became exasperated with the never-ending moaning from people like me: “Get over it, he won. He can’t do anything without the approval of congress anyway.” We now know legislatively, this isn’t true, and worse than the laws and changes (and judges) he legally implemented, his impact on the demeanor of the country is far worse. It must be very hard serving as a representative for our dysfunctional mess in your group of friends and coworkers. I think I might hang my head in shame.
Never have I been so tired sick to my stomach about being right. But again, anyone who is surprised by where we are has not been paying attention or has been willfully building an alternative narrative to suit their political or emotional needs. These people have told us what their intentions were every step of the way.
And yes, it’s fundamentally odd having to explain Britain shenanigan’s to Yanks and American shenanigans to Brits. I’m tired.
